Arab
League's Position on Israel's Military Aggression in
Rafah
May 18, 2004
The
Arab League's Council, prompted by the recent Israeli
aggression against the Palestinian civilians in Rafah,
causing wanton destruction of their homes and threatening
to destroy even more, met at the League's headquarters
in Cairo and issued a statement, dated on May 18, 2004,
that was adopted unanimously by the permanent representatives
of the Arab States. Some of the highlights are:
Condemnation
of Israel for the atrocities committed aimed at ethnically
cleansing the Palestinian people.
Appeal
to the UN's Security Council to adopt the resolution
of condemnation submitted by the members of the Arab
Group, and for the UN's Secretary General to remain
engaged in his efforts to see that the atrocities cease
immediately, and to provide international protection
to the Palestinian civilians.
Initiate
an immediate international campaign for humanitarian
support of the Palestinians, and request the International
Red Cross Committee to buttress its aid efforts to stem
a human disaster in the making.
Appeal
to the International Quartet (United States, Russia,
UN, and the European Union) to exercise their clout
and apply pressure on Israel to cease its aggression,
and to uphold the provisions of international law.
